Dementia News June 2025.
Here’s June’s dementia news, you might have missed:
Advancements in MRI technology are breaking new ground in predicting dementia long before symptoms appear.
A study led by Duke University has harnessed MRI data to develop a predictive tool that gauges aging speed, providing a glimpse into the likelihood of developing dementia decades ahead.
Known as DunedinPACNI, this innovative tool links faster aging with cognitive decline, chronic illness, and higher mortality.
Researchers hope to intervene earlier, enabling lifestyle changes that might mitigate future health issues.
This groundbreaking approach is poised to transform how we perceive aging and manage dementia risk across diverse populations.

A groundbreaking AI tool, StateViewer, is transforming dementia diagnosis by accurately identifying specific types, like Alzheimer’s, in 88% of studied cases.
By employing brain imaging technology, the tool compares patient scans against a vast database, analyzing glucose usage patterns in the brain.
1. FDG-PET Scans: These scans reveal brain energy usage.
2. Pattern Matching: AI compares these images to a database of confirmed diagnoses.
3. Visual Guidance: Color-coded maps assist doctors in interpretation.
This method promises earlier, precise diagnoses, leading to better-targeted treatments.
With plans to expand its usage, StateViewer could reshape dementia diagnostics, offering hope for many.

As vibrant as July 4th celebrations are, they can present challenges for individuals with dementia.
The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America emphasizes proactive planning to ensure these festivities remain inclusive.
Do: Prepare a quiet indoor space for your loved one. Use calm settings like air conditioners or white noise to soothe them.
Don’t: Expose them to live fireworks, as loud noises can trigger distress.
Do: Plan small gatherings with familiar faces to avoid overwhelming them.
Don’t: Engage them in large parades. Instead, watch them on TV.
Infusing the day with familiar activities like creating patriotic crafts or singing can enhance the celebration for everyone.

The Lawson Research Institute explores Ambroxol, a common European cough medicine, as a promising treatment for Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD).
In a clinical trial involving 55 participants, those treated with Ambroxol showed stabilization in psychiatric symptoms and cognitive function, unlike the placebo group.
This study highlights Ambroxol’s potential in protecting brain function, especially in genetically at-risk individuals with the high-risk GBA1 gene.
Importantly, it was safe, well-tolerated, and reached therapeutic brain levels.
While already used for respiratory conditions in Europe, ongoing research aims to confirm its effectiveness for PDD, offering new avenues for currently limited treatments.
