Whether or not to move a loved one into a memory care home is a huge decision and very emotional. Even with dementia care, each woman can have her own needs that will be different and unique from those of others. Many families do find, however, that their mothers or grandmothers feel most comfortable when they are in an environment that was designed with women in mind.
For many, an environment that is women-only becomes the solution for more than simply personal preference. It is what turns a place that is institutional into a place that is home. Under these circumstances, a female can let down her guard and just be herself.
Women find themselves in a position of natural relief, being in a female-only setting. It’s especially significant for women who may have experienced some sort of trauma or struggle with high levels of anxiety. Within a female-only home, there’s never a need to justify why women want to be within a female setting; it’s provided in the setting itself.
This feeling of security is also reflected in personal care. Our caregivers are extremely sensitive about modesty and dignity. Whether it’s a quieter approach to a morning routine or extra patience during dressing, we focus on making her feel comfortable during those moments that can otherwise feel invasive.
Women often share an unspoken bond from years of raising families, building careers, and caring for others. Having these things in common just makes conversation flow naturally.
You’ll witness one lady talking about her grandchildren, and before you know it, three others are chipping in with their own stories too. This is where the value in sitting among people “who get it” is obviously apparent. Because when memories slip away, bonds at the heart level can’t be lost. This is just one part of where a natural sisterhood exists at the community level among residents who are looking out for one another.
The energy in a women-only home is usually softer. Instead of loud activities, the day moves through quiet presence and conversation. We focus on familiar rhythms that bring back a sense of pride and purpose. With less noise and fewer social “triggers,” residents tend to settle in much faster. We’ve seen how this calmer environment leads to less worrying and a much greater willingness to engage with the day.
It can be a great setting for a woman if she:
However, this might not be a good fit when:
Every woman’s story is different. At Applewood Our House, we don’t see gender-specific care as a restriction, but as a refuge. Our goal is to provide a safe, personalized, and profoundly human experience; somewhere she can feel understood, supported, and, above all, at home.
